A beginner actress carefully reviewing her contract, pen in hand: the fee is written in black and white before the shoot

It is the question every beginner asks — and the one almost no one addresses honestly. Between the unrealistic promises of scammers and the embarrassed silence of some websites, it is hard to know what is true. So here is an article of truth: what a first casting really pays, what makes the fees rise afterwards, how you get paid — and the promises that should alert you. Plainly, and with no made-up figures.

How much do you earn for a first casting?

On the French market, the fee for a first casting — the filmed audition that is your first experience in front of the camera — generally ranges between 300 and 400 euros. It is real pay, for half a day to a full day of work, paid by a serious production on the same day.

Two important clarifications: this amount is a general range observed on the market, not a promise — every production sets its own rates in its contract. And it must never cost you anything: no registration fees, no compulsory portfolio, no “contribution”. A production that asks you for money before paying you any is not a production, it is a scam — our anti-scam guide details all the warning signs.

What makes the fees go up afterwards

The first casting is only a starting point: this is where your pay evolves, according to two main factors.

Notoriety, first. An actress who makes a name for herself receives more requests, chooses her projects and negotiates her rates upwards. Simple mechanics: the higher the demand, the higher the value.

The quality of the production, second. An actress is always better paid on a professional production from a recognised major studio — think of houses like PRIVATE or Marc Dorcel — than on amateur shoots filmed with a small camera. The major studios have budgets, casts and worldwide distribution networks: their fees are on another level. This is also why the choice of agency and of production quality matters from the very start — our process is designed for that level of standards.

Same-day payment: a bank transfer notification on a smartphone, amount deliberately blurred

How are you paid?

An adult actress's pay works on a flat fee basis: an amount set per shoot, defined before, never after. The rules of a serious production:

  • The contract before the shoot: the scene, the duration and the amount are written in black and white before anything starts. No contract, no shoot.
  • Payment on the same day: in a serious production, the fee is settled on the day of the shoot — not “after distribution”, not “at the end of the month”.
  • Self-employed status: almost all actresses work as independents. The fee is self-employment income, to be declared as such — simple once you are organised, and a clear contract makes everything transparent.
  • No unjustified withholding: if a scene stops early for safety or consent reasons, the work performed is paid in full — it is written in our article on consent.

The promises that should make you alert

Money is also a truth detector. On the production side, three promises never lie:

  • Unrealistic amounts (“€2,000 a day for beginners, no experience needed”): whoever promises ten times the market is fishing for a mug, not an actress.
  • Payment “after distribution”: fees are paid on the day of the shoot. Postponing payment means making you carry the risk in their place.
  • The fee that melts along the way: an amount that drops “because the scene was shorter” or “because of leftover costs” does not exist in a serious contract.

And on your side, one single rule: you never spend a single cent. Not before, not during, not “to secure” anything.

The real earnings of a beginner hold no mystery: a market-range fee, a written contract, payment on the day — and a path that rises with your notoriety and the level of the productions. At FrenchCasting, these principles have been applied from day one: the full journey is described here, and every step of the casting process is public. Everything else is empty promises.
